The Wachau Hof (often Wachauerhof written) is a council in the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt .

history

In Red Vienna between the wars produced numerous municipal residential buildings, 19 of them in the 2nd district. At the site of today's Wachauer Hof there was originally a swamp and meadow landscape. Only after the Danube regulation carried out from 1870 to 1875 was this area suitable for building projects. In 1923, the construction of the residential complex designed by the architect Hugo Mayer , which was to become the first Leopoldstadt community building in the interwar period, began. At that time there were urban reserve gardens including a palm house to the west, a municipal power station to the east and a residential building for officers from the nearby Archduke Wilhelm barracks to the south-east . In 1924 the community building, named after the Lower Austrian wine region Wachau - like the adjacent Wachaustraße - was completed and opened.

At the time of its completion, the Wachauer Hof had five shops, two workshops, a kindergarten and a swimming pool. At the beginning of 1927, the rent in the Wachauer Hof was 13 groschen per square meter (around 45 cents today, adjusted for inflation ). On October 8, 1927, one of the worst earthquakes in the history of Austria caused several cracks on the house walls.

From 1987 to 1989 elevators were installed and the residential complex was connected to the district heating system . A general renovation took place in 1994 and 1995. Today there are only two shops instead of five, one is a knife grinding shop, the other was a tobacco shop at least until the beginning of the 21st century. There is a small playground in one of the inner courtyards, the original kindergarten has been converted into a parent advice center.

General

The residential complex is under monument protection ( list entry ) and is bordered by Jungstraße, Engerthstraße, Wachaustraße and Vorgartenstraße. Staircase 5 on Vorgartenstrasse has no direct structural connection to the other staircases, as it connects to Wilhelminian style corner houses on both sides, which were built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and are not part of the municipal housing.

The building comprises 9 staircases, which are grouped around two inner courtyards, and with its gable roofs has elements of the homeland style . Towards Jungstrasse there is a recessed, low portal building to which the colored ceramic Two Scouts is attached, on which the name of the farm and two men carrying grapes are depicted. There are sgraffiti on both sides of the portal , which are two and three stories high. On the sgraffito The Four Ages people can be seen harvesting the grapes, on light and darkness signs of the zodiac are incorporated into a sundial . To the left and right of the courtyard entrance on Vorgartenstrasse there are reliefs on the first floor depicting naked boys. All reliefs and the ceramics were designed by the Austrian painter and sculptor Josef Franz Riedl.
