Wachenbrunn was first mentioned in a document in 1220. Other sources mention the year 1319. Historically, there has always been a connection to Themar. In 1920 he came to the state of Thuringia .

The Church of St. Johannis was built in 1870 as a rectangular building in the neo-Romanesque style according to plans by Meiningen building councilor August Wilhelm Döbner .
