The transmitter Wachenbrunn was a radio transmitter in the medium wave range in the Themar district of Wachenbrunn in Thuringia . The system was last operated by Media Broadcast GmbH .

history

Transmission system for 1323 kHz

From 1988 to 2012 Wachenbrunn was the location of a medium wave transmitter of the Russian foreign service Voice of Russia (formerly Radio Moscow ) on the frequency 1323 kHz. Like the broadcaster for the distribution of MDR info , it was operated by Media Broadcast GmbH. In the lunchtime and evening hours, the German-language program of the Voice of Russia was broadcast. This transmitter was the third strongest in Germany in terms of its transmission power and used a directional antenna consisting of four 125.1 meter high tubular lattice masts with a triangular cross-section, isolated from the ground ( coordinates ). Two masts were actively fed, the other masts served as reflectors. The transmitter was built from 1985 to 1988 by Russian technicians, the components also came from the former Soviet Union. In December 1988 the station started operations.

The tubular lattice masts, which the local population called the Russian Quartet , were erected about 800 meters away from the other parts of the facility in order to prevent the antennas from interacting . Until the modernization of the system in 2002/2003, the high-frequency energy intended for radiation was transmitted from the transmitter installed in the extension of the main building to the Russian Quartet via a trap line .

As part of the modernization, a fully transistorized 1,000-kilowatt transmitter from Telefunken with an efficiency of 84% was installed in an old warehouse on the site of the Russian Quartet . As a result, the trap line was largely superfluous and correspondingly shortened, so that line losses remained low. During the modernization of the facility, the masts of the Russian Quartet , which were previously silver-gray, were painted red and white.

In December 2012, the Voice of Russia announced that it would discontinue its medium-wave broadcasts from Wachenbrunn on January 1, 2013 for financial reasons. The medium-wave transmitters in Cremlingen-Abbenrode and Wilsdruff were also affected by this regulation . The transmitter in Wachenbrunn was switched off on December 31, 2012 at 11 p.m. as planned.

On September 19, 2013 at 2:55 p.m., the remaining four transmission masts were moved. This means that there is no longer a transmitter on this site.

Transmission system for 882 kHz

As early as October 7, 1950, the Weimar regional broadcaster put a small transmitter into operation to improve reception in southern Thuringia . This was listed as Hildburghausen or Schleusingen . The name Wachenbrunn appears for the first time in 1955, although the name Suhl was generally used until the 1970s . The GDR did not provide any information on the transmission power; West German sources gave it 5 kW, at times also 20 kW. From the mid-1950s, the program of Radio DDR, later Radio DDR I, was broadcast on the frequency 1052 kHz , until 1963 also the regional program of the Studio Suhl. From the mid-1970s, Radio DDR 1 used the frequency 629 kHz, while the Berliner Rundfunk program was broadcast on 1052 kHz .

On October 7, 1959, the last of the 250 kW transmitters from Funkwerk Köpenick went into operation in Wachenbrunn on the frequency of 692 kHz. This served primarily to supply southern Germany with the program of the Deutschlandsender (later voice of the GDR ).

The Geneva Wave Plan , which came into force in 1978, provided for the frequency of 882 kHz with directional radiation (40 °) for the 250 kW transmitter, but this was initially still used by the Königs Wusterhausen transmitter . Instead, Wachenbrunn used 1044 kHz in single-frequency operation with the Burg and Wilsdruff transmitters . It was not until the mid-1980s that they switched to 882 kHz, and instead of Radio DDR 1, the voice of the GDR was broadcast again. The 20 kW transmitter broadcast the Berliner Rundfunk program on 1431 kHz.

After the political change , the smaller station still broadcast radio up-to-date from 1990 to 1991 , after which the frequency of 1431 kHz was given up. The main frequency 882 kHz was taken over by the Thuringian radio and from 1992 by the central German radio.

Until 1993 this transmitter, which went into operation in the 1950s, was operated with a transmission power of 250 kilowatts. Two tubular masts with a height of 142.8 meters, insulated from the ground , served as the transmitting antenna . One of these tubular masts was used as a reflector mast on the Berlin-Köpenick broadcasting station, which was demolished in 2002 , before it was dismantled and rebuilt in Wachenbrunn. The transmitting antenna enabled directional radiation in a south-westerly direction. Until the mid-1990s there was still a triangular antenna and a smaller transmission mast isolated from earth. Both facilities are no longer available today.

Until June 30, 2011, this transmitter broadcasted the program MDR Info with a power of 20 kW on the frequency 882 kHz. Up until July 4, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., an activated announcement informed that the transmitter had been switched off. The transmitter system for the frequency 882 kHz was blown up on July 14, 2011. On March 12, 2015, the ground-breaking ceremony took place on the site of the transmitter for the construction of a photovoltaic open-space system with an output of 8.7 MW with public participation . Citizen participation is offered by EnergieGenossenschaft Inn-Salzach eG (EGIS).

The system has been connected to the public grid since May 13, 2015. The site was made accessible to the public for the first time on June 20, 2015 as part of an opening ceremony for the Wachenbrunn Citizen Solar Plant by EnergieGenossenschaft Inn-Salzach eG.
