Vadim Jewgenjewitsch Gippenreiter ( Russian Вадим Евгеньевич Гиппенрейтер ; born April 9, jul. / 22 April  1917 greg. In Moscow , former Russian Republic ; † 16th July 2016 ) was a Russian nature and landscape photographer , who as a young man, a national ski championships won and worked as a sports reporter.

Life

Gippenreiter was the son of a noble officer and member of the White Army who was killed in 1917. He had access to photography as a child, as his relatives enabled him to use plate cameras . At the age of ten he made his first recordings and also took care of the development of the glass plates and contact prints .

Gippenreiter was denied a degree in biology due to his origins in a noble family. However, his success in skiing, which culminated in 1937 with a victory as the first USSR champion in alpine downhill skiing , enabled him to study medicine. After moving to the Moscow Institute of the Arts , he was able to graduate as a photographer there in 1948. Gippenreiter made a name for himself as a sports reporter and journalist in the following years. He later became an official photographer at the Soviet Academy of Sciences and was able to participate in at least 37 expeditions within the USSR in this capacity. Thanks to his excellent athletic training and skills - among other things, he was the first mountaineer to climb Elbrus in order to manage the descent from the summit on skis - he managed to get his camera to places inaccessible to other photographers, and so on create unique photographs.

Vadim Gippenreiter is considered a co-founder of Russian nature photography and the Russian school of artistic landscape photography. He is the author of 35 books and hundreds of publications, including in renowned magazines such as Geo , Stern and National Geographic . His photographs have been shown at numerous exhibitions in Russia, England, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and France. According to their own statements, the complete works comprise over 50,000 photographs. Gippenreiter was an honorary member of the Russian Federation for Alpine and Snowboard Sports.

He was honored with the Order of Honor in 2012 by the President of Russia Dmitri Anatolyevich Medvedev .
