Vadim Viktorovich Bakatin
Vadim Viktorovich Bakatin ( Russian: Вадим Викторович Бакатин , English: Vadim Viktorovich Bakatin; born November 6, 1937 in Kisseljowsk , Kemerovo Oblast ) is a Russian politician and was the last head of the KGB in 1991 .
Life
After attending school, Bakatin completed a degree as a civil engineer at the Civil Engineering Institute in Novosibirsk and then worked in this profession for 13 years, most recently as chief engineer of a housing combine. In 1964 he joined the CPSU . In 1973 he became second secretary of the CPSU city committee in Kemerovo, later secretary of the district party committee. After graduating from the Academy for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the CPSU , from 1985 to 1987 he was first secretary of the regional party committee in Kirov . In 1986 he became a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. In 1987 he returned to Kemerovo as first secretary of the regional party committee.
In October 1988, Bakatin was appointed Minister of the Interior of the USSR . In this capacity he was replaced by Boris Pugo in December 1990 .
In the first Russian presidential elections in 1991 Bakatin ran unsuccessfully as an independent. With 3.42 percent of the vote, he only came in last.
After the failed August coup in Moscow , Bakatin took over the leadership of the KGB on August 23, 1991. Its task was the dissolution of the Soviet secret service, which took place officially in November 1991. After that he was head of the short- term Inter-Republican Security Service (MSB).
In 1992 Bakatin became Vice President and Director of the Political and International Relations Department of the International Reforma Fund . In 1997, he took a position as a director at the investment company Baring Vostok Capital Partners .
