Unable to look his daughter Serena in the eye, he eventually kills himself. Lord Justin Vulcan, a notorious and clear-thinking gamer, then challenges Wrotham and plays with him around the house and the girl. To Wrotham's indignation, he wins. Justin now owns a house and a girl, but doesn't know what to do with it. But after meeting Serena and realizing that she is much younger and prettier than he imagined, he invites her to his family home, regardless of his spiteful mother, Lady Harriet Vulcan. While Lady Vulcan tries to marry Serena to every man but her son, Serena and Justin become friends and he leads her to every corner of his beloved home. A crisis separates the two from each other. Serena, left alone with his mother, is soon in great danger when Lady Vulcan seeks her life. There is a chase through the entire property.
