Wai-iti is a small settlement in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the settlement means "little river" in the Māori language .
geography
The settlement is located around 29 km southwest of Nelson , directly on New Zealand State Highway 6 between Foxhill , around 2.5 km southwest and Wakefield , around 4.5 km northeast. The Wai-iti River flows through the settlement and flows further northeast into the Waimea River .
history
Wai-iti received a rail connection to Nelson through the first section of the Nelson Railway, opened in 1876 . After several extensions to the Gowan Bridge , the line was finally closed on September 3, 1955 and then dismantled.
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust has registered three buildings in the area as historic buildings:
- two hop kilns on Hoult Valley Road West
- former train station on State Highway 6
