Waihola is a village in the Clutha District of the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name of the village is taken from the name of the adjacent lake and is a transformation of the term " Wai-hora " in the Māori language , which means "expanding water".
geography
The village is located about 35 km southwest of the center of Dunedin and 15 km northeast of Milton , directly on the 9 km 2 large Lake Waihola . The village is crossed by New Zealand State Highway 1 and the Main South Line , which connects Invercargill to the southwest and Dunedin to the northeast without a stop at Waihola .
population
At the 2013 census, the town had 300 inhabitants.
tourism
Waihola is popular with day-trippers from northeast Dunedin who use the lake for water sports , swimming and fishing.
