The clematis ( Eupithecia haworthiata , Syn .: Tephroclystia isogrammaria ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the spanners (Geometridae). The species was named after the British lepidopterist Adrian Hardy Haworth .
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the very small moth is 12 to 18 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings is mostly gray-brown. Some light cross lines stand out. Some of these are created twice. A central spot is missing. The center line on the hind wings is only weakly indicated. The color of the first abdominal segments , which are bright yellow, orange or reddish in color, is typical of the species . This is the characteristic that distinguishes the moths from other species of florist.
Egg, caterpillar, pupa
The egg is slightly elongated, spherical on one pole and somewhat flattened on the other.
The caterpillars are short and thick. As long as they live in the buds of the food plant, they are whitish-green in color and show dark longitudinal lines. Immediately before pupation, they take on a dark red-brown color.
Greenish wing sheaths sometimes stand out from the red-brown pupa . The Kremaster is equipped with eight very short bristles.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The clematis occurs in large parts of western, southern and central Europe as well as in Asia Minor and the Caucasus . It can be found in the Alps up to 1800 meters, in the Apennines up to 1400 meters and in the Balkan Mountains up to 1500 meters above sea level . The species can be found on the edges of forests, in swamp forests and bushes, as well as in gardens.
Way of life
The moths are nocturnal and fly in a generation with flight times from May to August. They appear in both sexes in artificial light sources . The caterpillars live from June to July and prefer to feed on the buds and flowers of the common clematis ( Clematis vitalba ). Occasionally they were also found on ornamental forms of the clematis in gardens. The fully grown, red-brown caterpillars drop to the ground, where they are well camouflaged in color, and pupate on the ground. The pupae overwinter, sometimes twice.
Danger
The clematis is widespread in Germany and is listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
