The Fröttstädt – Georgenthal railway , also known as the Waldsaumbahn , is a branch line in Thuringia . The line, which is only partially in operation today, runs from Fröttstädt via Friedrichroda to Georgenthal .
history
The railway line on 28 May 1848 opened branch line of the Thuringian Railway to Waltershausen . It is therefore the oldest branch line in Thuringia . The extension to Friedrichroda was then opened on July 2, 1876. On November 1, 1896, the further section of the route from Friedrichroda to the Ohratal Railway to Georgenthal was opened, but it was shut down and dismantled on November 2, 1947 as a reparation for the Soviet Union .
The Nahverkehrsservicegesellschaft Thüringen (NVS) has already considered canceling the local rail transport on the entire route several times due to insufficient passenger numbers (the Thuringian Forest Railway to Gotha runs in the immediate vicinity ) . The transport contract with DB Regio to operate the route ended on December 10, 2017. The route is included in the so-called diesel network Südthüringen , which has been operated by the Süd-Thüringen-Bahn (STB) since the end of 2017 .

Operating points
- Fröttstädt
At the station Fröttstädt the station building is currently empty. Parts of the station system were dismantled with the connection to the ESTW .
- Hörselgau
The breakpoint was created in connection with the neighboring industrial park. It is merely a need stop .
- Waltershausen
At Waltershausen station , due to the limited signaling options provided by main signals, both station tracks that are in operation are still used, as exit signals are only located on one platform. Train crossings no longer take place as planned. The station is the only one on the route to be manned by a dispatcher , who at the same time regulates the driving service in train control between Waltershausen and Friedrichroda. The dilapidated main building of the train station was demolished in September 2017 in order to build a connection point to bus traffic and P + R places on the area.
- Waltershausen-Schnepfenthal
The former station building was dismantled and replaced by a bus shelter.
- Reinhardsbrunn-Friedrichroda
The station ensemble is a listed building. On June 3, 2015, the city of Friedrichroda bought the station from Bahn AG for € 2,500 in order to preserve it and use it appropriately. In September 2017 she had extensions and outbuildings that were not worth preserving demolished. The station ensemble was considered to be one of the most beautiful facilities in Thuringia because of the charming reception building in the Thuringian half-timbered style and the unique prince's pavilion with its leaded glass windows. The regional trains currently only stop when required.
- Friedrichroda
After the cessation of freight traffic, the current terminus at Friedrichroda expired. The extensive disused freight tracks and the now oversized reception building with a large freight shed testify to the former importance of the line and this station. While a youth club was temporarily located in one part of this reception building, the remaining part has been left to decay.
Vehicle use
DB Regio used class 641 railcars until 2017 .
