The "Alte Burg" Erberich ramparts are located southeast of the town of Erberich high above the Dhünntal in the municipality of Odenthal in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

description

It is a multi-tiered wall-trench system. Five section walls run one behind the other from southeast to northwest and each have a trench in front of them. The walls were probably built from the earth that was dug out of the trenches. The two outer walls in the northwest are 80 meters apart. Three more walls, located close behind one another, follow at a distance of about 70 meters from the front ones. The walls are on average one meter to 1.6 meters high. Only the fifth wall is significantly higher at 2.2 meters. So far nothing is known about the interior of the facility.

With regard to the question of the dating of the fortifications, there is still some uncertainty. Excavations of stone tools and ceramic fragments in the immediate vicinity of the ramparts date to the older Iron Age (approx. 8th to 5th centuries BC) and the Roman Empire (2nd century AD). Remnants of vessels from the Middle Ages and the earlier Iron Age as well as a bronze sickle, which can be dated to the late Bronze Age (approx. 13th to 9th century BC), come from the area of the ramparts itself . A bronze ring found in close proximity may be the same age. The oldest find on the site is marked by a small stone ax that proves the use or inspection of the site spur in the Neolithic Age (approx. 5200 to 2200 BC).
