The moth Saaler mill is a small Outbound Turmhügelburg (Motte) in Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
description
The castle complex was in the colloquially Saaler Mühlenteich, called Bensberger See, in the Saaler Mühle district of the Kippekausen district .
Most of it was flooded when the site was redesigned as a sport and recreational area in 1969–1973. It previously consisted of several neighboring embankments, which were either a large multi-part moth or two neighboring systems with associated farms.
Before the site was flooded, an inspection by archaeologists from the Rheinisches Landesmuseum took place in 1969 , during which up to five embankments, some of which were surrounded by ditches, were identified as probable remains of the medieval complex. However, their clear assignment was made considerably more difficult by the opencast mines and heaps of the directly neighboring, modern lignite mine Consolidation Alfred .
No further archaeological investigations took place. Since then, only a 15 × 20 m large and 5 m high hill of the originally extensive castle complex has been visible above ground, steeply sloping as an island protruding from the lake.
The Motte Saaler Mühle seems to be related to the internal development of the Bergisches Land in the 9th to 13th centuries. In the immediate vicinity there was the Knight's Seat Hall in the late Middle Ages, of which no buildings have been preserved. Little is known about the history of this knight's seat, only for the year 1511 is there a definite record of the lords of Zweiffel .
The Saaler Mühle was demolished in 1969 as the last building of the associated courtyard complex and the Bensberg indoor swimming pool was built in its place.
