The Wallburg Ambrock is a small rampart in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The Wallburg Ambrock is located in the southern part of the independent city Hagen in district Hagen-Dahl at the border from the Ruhr to Sauerland . The Wallburg is 224  m above sea level. NN on the top of the Minnerberg, a wooded hill above the Volme valley between the village of Ambrock in the north and the Dahl district to the south . It is shown as a cultural monument on the maps of the Land Survey Office of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Emergence

The sources for the creation of the Wallburg Ambrock are contradictory. While, according to the historical center of Hagen, the complex was probably built in the 10th or 11th century, other sources speak of an estimated age of 2000 years. Ceramic finds , so-called Pingsdorf ceramics , prove at least one use of the castle in the 10th and 11th centuries.
A more detailed description of this heavily fortified complex was first published in 1888 by Karl Mummenthey. During the time of the Nazi regime , Dr Gerhard Brüns , head of the Hagen City Museum of Local History, had excavations carried out on the Wallburg, but these did not lead to a more precise dating.

The castle has two walls staggered one behind the other, which secure the endangered west, north and east flanks. On the steeply sloping south side, no separate rampart was required for securing. On the most endangered west side there is a lower rampart in front of each of the two walls, which is also indicated by the dug trenches .

The inner wall is accompanied along its entire length by a pointed ditch with a rampart. The outer ring wall, on the other hand, is only additionally secured with a rampart on the particularly endangered south-west side. The ramparts were accessed via the high plateau in the north-west of the castle. In this area the ramparts are interrupted and gates can be assumed there, but nothing is known about their exact structure.
Excavation finds on the level between the two main walls have shown deepenings in the ground, which could possibly indicate a wooden palisade wall for additional protection.

Today the facility is freely accessible at all times. The individual walls and trenches are partly easy to recognize or at least can still be guessed at. A high-voltage line was laid over the system, a mast of which is located on the site of the Wallburg and during the construction of which historical parts of the system may have at least been damaged.
