Dieter Freiherr von Andrian-Werburg (born April 26, 1925 in Berlin-Steglitz ; † December 25, 1992 in Kassel ) was a German graphic artist , who was primarily known for his commercial graphics , as well as for postage stamp designs for the Deutsche Bundespost and pictograms in the railway sector got known.

Career

Dieter von Andrian comes from the Andrian-Werburg family . He was born as the third child of the Syndic Carl Anton Freiherr von Andrian-Werburg (1881-1939) and his wife Auguste (1883-1948). In 1943 he passed the Abitur at the Steglitz Gymnasium in Berlin. Before that, he attended evening classes at a private art school. After graduating from school, he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then into military service. After being a prisoner of war , he first worked as a translator for English in Hannoversch Münden from 1946 . In 1947 he began to study at the reopened Staatliche Werkakademie Kassel with Ernst Röttger , Arnold Bode , Kay H. Nebel and Hans Leistikow , which he graduated in 1952. In 1953 he married Johanna Grebenstein. The marriage resulted in four daughters. Von Andrian lived and worked in Schauenburg-Elgershausen from 1965 to 1992.

At the end of his studies he won first prize in a competition for the poster for the 1953 Munich Travel and Transport Exhibition . He was also commissioned to design two exhibition halls for the transport exhibition. A year later, his poster was named one of the best posters of 1953. These successes encouraged him to set up his own business.

From 1958 to 1960 Andrian was assistant to Arnold Bode , the founder of the documenta and between 1956 and 1965 employee of ANA-Werbung KG in Kassel. In 1969 and 1970 he was a guest lecturer at the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Kassel (today: Kunsthochschule Kassel). He was a member of the German Werkbund . He received an award in 1957 at the 11th Milan Triennale for his poster design. In 1983 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his work .

As a glass painter, von Andrian designed numerous stained glass windows, church windows and mosaics such as B. the mural "Glass City" in Kassel (1968, re-installation after restoration in 2019). He also designed books and posters for the State Art Collections in Kassel .
