The baroque Church of Our Lady on the Schönbühl in Todtmoos ( southern Black Forest ) is the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Todtmoos and a pilgrimage church , to which numerous pilgrims come to this day . She belongs to the pastoral care unit Todtmoos in the dean's office Waldshut of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

Building history

According to the founding legend, a wooden chapel was built in 1255, which was replaced by a first church building in 1268 at the instigation of Rudolf von Habsburg . At the same time a parish office is being set up. A second church building with the dimensions 4.5 by 9 meters follows in 1300, which was supplemented in 1391 by a choir and a sacristy . Due to the dilapidation, a new church building became necessary in the first half of the 17th century.

The current church was built between 1625 and 1632. It had a ridge turret as a tower, a domed sign that is still present today and was decorated with painting on the facade .

Between 1770 and 1778 it was thoroughly redesigned by the architect Franz Joseph Salzmann . A plaster vault was drawn in. The stucco work comes from Johann Kaspar Gigl from the Wessobrunn school . Altars, pulpit, stalls, baptismal fonts, confessionals and portal were newly created, among others by the Pfluger brothers. In the Anna Chapel there is a silver relief by the Augsburg goldsmith Elias Jäger . The new frescoes were created by the painter Johann Anton Morath . These changes were made possible by the influence and resources of the St. Blasien monastery , because Todtmoos was a branch office (superiorate) of this abbey, which was important at the time. She was able to win over well-known craftsmen and artists for herself and her possessions far beyond the country's borders.

In 1927 the church was expanded. According to plans by the Karlsruhe building historian and architect Fritz Hirsch , it was given a new tower and two new aisles, the nave was lengthened to the rear and the roof was raised by six meters. Based on the original motifs from 1627, facade paintings from the Renaissance period were applied again.

Morath was also involved in the design of the neighboring rectory , which also served as the summer residence of the abbots of St. Blasien . The building was built by the architect Johann Michael Beer von Bleichten in 1733. The staircase there was planned by Johann Kaspar Bagnato from 1748–1749 , and the Wessobrunn plasterer Franz Anton Vogel made the stucco work for it.
