Gundel Wittmann

Wally "Gundel" Wittmann (born September 18, 1905 in Berlin ; † May 28, 1990 there ) was a German athlete and handball player who was successful in the late 1920s and early 1930s. She started for SC Charlottenburg and the Brandenburg Sports Club .

From 1950 to 1968 she was a member of the board of directors of SC Charlottenburg women's handball.

Services

As a track and field athlete, she was able to place herself at German championships several times :

  • 1924 third over 100 m and champion in javelin throw
  • 1925 second over 100 m
  • 1926 champion over 100 m

In addition, she was involved in a world record over 4 × 200 m three times:

  • 1928 with the relay of the Charlottenburg sports club
  • 1929 with the relay of the Brandenburg Sports Club
  • 1932 with the national relay in 1: 45.8 min, set up on June 26th in Neurössen (Team: Ruth Engelhard , G. Feldmann, Gundel Wittmann and Margarete Gericke )

On the world rankings of those years, she was among the top ten three times:

  • 1924:
    • 200 m place 9 (27.4 s)
    • Javelin throw 2nd place (29.74 m)
  • 1926: 100 m 3rd place (12.3 s)

The following best performances are given for them:

  • 100 m : 12.3 s, run on August 22, 1926 in Braunschweig
  • 200 m : 26.1 s, run on August 2, 1930 in Lennep (this performance only brought her to 20th place in the world rankings!)
  • Javelin throw: 29.74 m, thrown on August 9, 1924 in Stettin

Honors

On September 1, 2007, the " Mommsenstadion - ancillary places" in Berlin's Waldschulallee were renamed " Wally-Wittmann-Sportanlage " in her honor .
