Life

Wohlgemuth studied human medicine at the University of Regensburg , the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich as well as health economics at the University of Bayreuth . After completing his dissertation, he began working at the Clinic for Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology and at the Clinic for Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology at the Augsburg Clinic , since 2001 as a senior physician and since 2003 as senior physician and head of the vascular and interventional radiology department.

Since 2002 Wohlgemuth has worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Medical Management and Health Sciences at the University of Bayreuth. In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Law and Economics there and received a license to teach in the fields of medical management and health sciences. From 2007 to 2011 he was part-time managing director of GWS Gesundheit Wissenschaft Demokratie GmbH, a research and consulting company in the healthcare sector. In 2009 he founded the interdisciplinary department for congenital vascular defects at the Augsburg Clinic and took over its management until 2011. In 2011 he was appointed professor for interventional radiology and senior physician at the Institute for X-ray Diagnostics at the University Hospital in Regensburg. From 2012 to 2017 he headed the Interdisciplinary Center for Vascular Anomalies in Regensburg. In February 2015 he founded the first German center for pediatric interventional radiology, an interdisciplinary treatment unit for children using minimally invasive surgical methods. In June 2017 he was appointed full professor and director of the University Clinic and Polyclinic for Radiology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . There he has also been heading the Interdisciplinary Center for Vascular Anomalies (IZG) at the University Hospital Halle (Saale) since 2018 .

Main focus of work and research

Wohlgemuth started his scientific career in the field of neurology, u. a. with the first description of a rare clinical picture (load-dependent ischemia of the lumbosacral plexus ) in order to then work in sequence research in magnetic resonance imaging . In addition to parallel health economic publications, he focused on the psychometric measurement of health-related quality of life, including the development of new measuring instruments.

Another focus was the scientific research in the field of interventional radiology. Among other things, the evaluation of a new method for restenosis prophylaxis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty using endovascular brachytherapy , the development of a new method for portal vein thrombectomy and, in particular, embolization therapy with liquid embolisms. His current focus is on the development of interventional procedures in children, aortic stent grafts and the diagnosis and treatment of congenital vascular malformations, including the first description of a new method for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations.

Memberships in scientific associations

Wohlgemuth was the official representative of Eckhard Nagel in the "Commission for Sustainability in Financing Social Security Systems", which was set up by the German government as a panel of experts from 2002 to 2003 under the name of the Rürup Commission . Since 2005 he has been a member of the specialist committee for medicine and health sciences at AQUIN, a large German accreditation, certification and quality assurance institute for the certification of study programs, as well as a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Association for Congenital Vascular Malformations and deputy spokesman for the AG Vascular Diseases in Childhood of the German Society for angiology . Wohlgemuth is currently a member of the review board of the journals European Radiology , Health Policy and Cardio Vascular and Interventional Radiology . Since the beginning of 2017 he has been Chairman of the Board of the German Interdisciplinary Society for Vascular Anomalies (DiGGefa) as well as the editor and author of the Compendium Vascular Anomalies , a freely accessible information portal with scientific expert knowledge on the diagnosis and therapy of vascular anomalies.
