Walter von Hoesslin

Walter Alfred Wilhelm Balthasar von Hoesslin (born March 5, 1910 in Augsburg , † January 7, 1996 in Vienna ) was a set designer . He was director of the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and co-founder of the Bregenz Festival .

Act

Hoesslin studied with Alfred Roller , Oskar Strnad and Max Reinhardt . From 1935 until his death he taught as a professor at the Reinhardt Seminar and was its director from 1977 to 1983. In 1945 he became chief designer of the Vienna Volksoper and was instrumental in founding the Bregenz Festival in 1946. Hoesslin was also involved in the design of the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck.

Walter von Hoesslin came from a noble family who had lived in Augsburg since the 17th century and was the son of the officer Hans von Hößlin (1880–1947) and Lilly Emmy Luise Helene Schmidt (1889–1961). He was married three times. The first marriage comes from the daughter Ariane (* 1941), from the second the daughter Eva Maria (* 1948), married to Wolf von Schilgen .

His final resting place is in the Neustifter Friedhof (13-3-15) in Vienna.
