Walter Cappel

Walter Cappel (born June 9, 1918 in Adenbach ; † June 16, 2004 in Elmstein ) was a German educator .

Life and academic career

Walter Cappel was born into a family of teachers with a Protestant background. Both parents and a grandfather were teachers. From 1941 he studied geography , mathematics and physics for three semesters at the TU Darmstadt . Between 1943 and 1945 he was an American prisoner of war. In 1946 he continued his studies at the University of Mainz and graduated with the state examination. In 1949 he received his doctorate in geography. In 1950/51 he studied at Yale University in New Haven (USA). In 1951 he married Marjorie Hayner from Seattle USA. After his return to Germany, he taught as a high school teacher in Kusel, then as a lecturer in natural science and handicrafts, and later also in psychology at the Kusel and Kaiserslautern Pedagogical Academy. From 1953 he studied psychology. In 1955 and 1958 his two children were born. In 1957 he received a diploma in psychology and was later appointed professor and then director of the University of Education in Kaiserslautern. From 1967 until his retirement in 1983 he was director of the Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education (FWU) in Grünwald near Munich. Walter Cappel died in Elmstein on June 16, 2004 at the age of 86.
