Walter Eaton (3rd quarter 1881 in Sheffield , † May 15, 1917 in France ) was an English football player .

Career

Eaton came in the summer of 1903 from Attercliffe , a club from a suburb of Sheffield , with the recommendation to be able to play both defender and attacking to the professional club The Wednesday and was described as "sturdy but small". At Wednesday he was usually part of the reserve team. His only competitive game for the first team dated April 3, 1905, when he was used in a game in the Football League First Division 1904/05 . In the home game against Derby County he represented Willie Layton on the position of right defender (final score 1: 1). At the end of the season Eaton was not signed by The Wednesday and he therefore played from the summer of 1905 in nearby Rotherham in the Midland League , first for Rotherham County and later for Rotherham Town . In County he wore some of the captain's armband, in Town he played in the reserve team at least until the end of 1908, but had to struggle with knee problems, which were cited in obituaries as an obstacle to a greater football career.

Later he was the captain of the football church team of St. John's (Park) Church , in which he also served as a worship helper ( sidesman ). For the team he was active at least until 1914 and won with her two times in a row the championship of the Sheffield Sunday School League . Eaton not only excelled as a footballer, but also played cricket , he led the church team, which was taking up as St. John's Institute , in 1912 as captain to the championship in the Hallam and District League , after which he played for the Exchange CC . He earned his living as a punch of metal hollow vessels ( hollowware stamper ).

Eaton served with the rank of private in World War I ; first in the York and Lancaster Regiment and then with the Northumberland Fusiliers . He was wounded in fighting in northern France and died on May 15, 1917 at the age of 35 in a French hospital. Eaton was buried in the British War Cemetery in Étaples in the Pas-de-Calais department . He left behind his wife and a daughter.
