Walter Fischer (mountaineer)

Walter Fischer (born July 5, 1880 in Dresden ; † May 23, 1960 ibid) was a German climber , mountaineer , alpinist and lawyer .

Life

He was the son of a Dresden businessman. After attending school and one year of military service, Walter Fischer went to study law at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Leipzig and Munich from 1901. In 1906 he became a trainee lawyer in Bad Schandau , later he settled as a lawyer and public notary in the Saxon state capital Dresden. In his free time he is intensively involved in climbing and mountaineering in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains on both sides of the German-Bohemian border.

His special merits include several first ascents in Saxon Switzerland , such as the Mittlerer Hirschgrund Tower, the Hohen Torstein (Fischerweg named after him) and the Lehnsteig Tower.

He also worked as an alpinist together a. a. with Gustav Kuhfahl in the Wetterstein Mountains, Wilder Kaiser and in the Dolomites. In 1903 he joined the Berggeist Alpine Club in Munich .

From 1910 he actively participated in the mountaineering development of the Caucasus . On July 4, 1914, Walter Fischer started another expedition to the Caucasus with his friend Oscar Schuster and two Swiss mountaineers. The beginning of the First World War surprised the expedition in the Caucasus . While the Swiss mountaineers were allowed to leave the country as members of a neutral country, fishermen and shoemakers were arrested in Sukhumi and were interned in Russia . At malaria ill they came after some time to Orenburg , where malaria is a pulmonary tuberculosis was come. At the end of 1916 Schuster was imprisoned in an internment camp in Astrakhan, where he fell ill with typhus and finally succumbed to his illness on June 2, 1917 and was buried three days later. As a reminder, a memorial plaque was attached to the family grave in the Trinity cemetery in Dresden. Walter Fischer was only able to return to Dresden at the end of the war in 1918, where he took over his law firm again.
