Walter Geisler (singer)
Walter Geisler (* 1913 in Opole ; † June 9, 1979 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( hero tenor ).
Life
Walter Geisler began his career in 1938 at the Greifswald City Theater , but was drafted as a soldier in the following year. In 1940 he came to the theater in Brüx, and in 1943 to Reichenberg (Liberec). After the end of the war he took up his stage work in 1947 at the City Theater of Göttingen and in 1948 at the State Theater Wiesbaden and in 1949 at the Hamburg State Opera . At the same time he was engaged at the Komische Oper Berlin , where he sang Max in Freischütz . This was followed by guest performances at the Städtische Oper Berlin (1956–1961), the State Theater Hanover (1956–1959) and the Nationaltheater Mannheim (1959–1965). In 1957 he came to the Bayreuth Festival , where he sang Walther von Stolzing in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg .
Further guest appearances took him from 1954 to 1955 to the Berlin State Opera , 1957 to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, 1963 to the Theater of Graz , 1969 as Tristan in the Liege Opera and in 1962 as Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos at the May Festival in Wiesbaden.
His roles ranged from Belmonte ( The Abduction from the Seraglio ), Erik ( The Flying Dutchman ), Siegmund ( The Valkyrie ), Walther von Stolzing ( The Mastersingers of Nuremberg ), Kaiser ( The Woman Without a Shadow ), Otello , Grieux in Puccini's Manon Lescaut , Rodolfo ( La Bohème ), José ( Carmen ). In the 1970s he held a professorship at the Berlin Conservatory .
