Walter Girg

Walter Girg (born August 13, 1919 in Hamburg-Harburg ; † July 25, 2010 ) was a German officer in the Waffen SS during World War II .

Life

Girg's parents are the Austrian engineer Franz Girg and Rosa, née Blunder. He also had an older sister and two younger brothers. In 1925 the family moved from Hamburg to Pressburg . Girg grew up there and attended school. Girg did an apprenticeship as a machinist after school . In 1936 he joined the Hitler Youth and on January 1, 1938, he became a member of the General SS . On May 1, 1938, he joined the SS army as a volunteer.

Military career

Girg volunteered for the SS army and served in the SS division "Reich" (motorized) in the eastern theaters of war during World War II . After joining the SS-Jagdverband Mitte, under the command of Otto Skorzeny , Girg participated in several important reconnaissance and sabotage operations. These included the company Panzerfaust (1944) in Hungary and operations in Romania (1944) and in Pomerania and West Prussia (1945). After his missions, Girg was awarded the highest German war awards.

After his capture by US troops, Girg was questioned intensively by the US intelligence services.

After 1945

After changing the political relationship between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union, Girg was recruited by the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC). His agency files were only made available to the public in 2006. In the following years after the war Girg was active for the German Federal Intelligence Service .
