Walter Gitschthaler (born October 23, 1959 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) is an officer in the Austrian Armed Forces with the rank of brigadier and since 2012 military commander of Carinthia .

Life

Walter Gitschthaler was born on 23 October 1959 in Klagenfurt and completed after primary school in Sankt Jakob im Rosental and Gymnasium in Klagenfurt from 1978 to 1982, the officer training at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt , where he became lieutenant was retired .

After that he was platoon commander and company commander in Jägerbataillon 25 . From September 1996 to April 1997 he completed a battalion commanders course at the National Defense Academy. From 1997 to 2000 he was in command of the 27th Jäger Battalion.

From October 2000 to October 2001 Gitschtahler acted as a member of the project group Cooperative Best Effort 2001 in the Corps Command I in Graz and in 2002 an assignment abroad in Kosovo as well as further international exercises in Italy, Ukraine and Germany followed. From 2004 to 2006 he served as a mission officer within SFOR and EUFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina .

From 2006, Gitschthalter was head of the exercise planning and planning of foreign missions of the armed forces in the armed forces command in Graz. In October 2007 he became head of staff work and deputy military commander of Carinthia .

The officer was appointed military commander of Carinthia and promoted to brigadier on August 1, 2012. He replaced Brigadier Gunther Spath , who was retiring.

Walter Gitschthaler is married and has two daughters.
