Walter Herrenbrück (born April 18, 1939 in Leer , East Frisia ) is an Evangelical Reformed theologian and, as a state superintendent, was for many years the leading clergyman of the Evangelical Reformed Church based in Leer.

Live and act

Walter Herrenbrück, son of Walter Herrenbrück senior , who was also regional superintendent in Leer from 1951 to 1963, studied theology in Wuppertal (church university), Heidelberg , Bonn and Göttingen . He then completed his vicariate in Bunde near Leer.

In 1965 he took over a parish pastor in Uelsen in the county of Bentheim , which he provided for 12 years.

In 1978 he was offered a professorship at the seminary in Wuppertal - Elberfeld , of which he was director until 1987. In 1987 he was elected to succeed Gerhard Nordholt as the state superintendent , ie the leading clergyman, of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Northwest Germany , which merged in 1989 to form the Evangelical Reformed Church (Synod of Evangelical Churches in Bavaria and Northwest Germany) . Until 2004 he worked in this position for the united regional church. He handed over the office to Jann Schmidt , who continued it until 2013 under the newly created title of " Church President ". Other functions

Walter Herrenbrück jun. was a member of the Central Committee of the Conference of European Churches (KEK) and a member of the board of the Working Group of Christian Churches (ACK). From 1994 to 2003 he was a member of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and was the representative of the EKD Council for military pastoral care and conscientious objection / community service . He was also a member of the Moderamens, the governing body of the Reformed Federation , which represents reformed interests in the EKD. Walter Herrenbrück was chairman of the Evangelical Working Group on Conscientious Objection and Peace from 2006 to 2012 and deputy chairman of the Association for Peace Work in the EKD area from 2010 to 2012.
