Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe

Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe (* 1934 in Sumatra ) is a German theologian . He was the first pastor of the German-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Church Community in Kenya .

Life

Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe was born in Sumatra as the son of a teacher and a businessman. In 1936 the family moved to Pomerania and fled to Hamburg during the Second World War , where Hildebrandt-Von Graefe went to school and began studying theology before moving to the theological faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . After his ordination in 1963 he became a pastor in Hamburg-Langenhorn . Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe is married and has four children. Since his retirement in 1999 he has lived in Hamburg-Volksdorf .

Act

Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe was appointed in March 1967 by the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) as the first full-time pastor of the German community in Kenya, which was founded in May of the same year as the Evangelical German Language Congregation in Kenya . The official introduction to his office took place together with the introduction of the first church council on July 9, 1967. Under his leadership the legal constitution, which was completed in 1971, took place. In addition, on his advice, the pastoral care center for German-speaking Catholics was founded in Nairobi in 1969 .

In 1973 Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe returned to Hamburg and became a consultant for world services in the North Elbe Mission Center (NMZ) . In this function he became head of studies at Haus am Schüberg and managing director of the Committee for Church World Services (AKWD) in 1974 alongside Rolf Christiansen ( adviser for the church district Stormarn ) and Justus Freytag ( adviser for overseas services ) . As a result of his work, the catering was switched to sustainable wholefood nutrition , which is still one of the essential leitmotifs of the conference business today. As managing director of the AKWD and world service consultant , he brought the idea of development policy education work into the Schleswig-Holstein parishes and coined a new concept of mission . In the late 70s a former factory building in Hamburg-Ottensen to a communication and information center with a development focus to the so-called workshop 3 was expanded, the involved AKWD on his advice in 1978 to the cost of this workshop for international culture and politics , and could thus made a very significant contribution to communicating development policy issues to the public and at the same time promoting the professionalization of development policy action groups.

Since his return from Kenya, Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe has been working in the editorial team of the booklets on information on world conflicts , which initially appeared independently and later as a monthly supplement to the North Elbian Voices .

In 1979 Hildebrandt-Von Graefe moved to the counseling center of the Stormarn church district, but stayed in the house at Schüberg and in 1980 took over the tasks of Rolf Christiansen to offer and implement programs for the Stormarn church district. In 1981 Walter Hildebrandt-Von Graefe took over a pastor's position in Bergstedt , which he held until his retirement in April 1999.
