Walter Kaestner (born January 8, 1912 in Lokstedt near Hamburg ; † May 13, 2005 in Hamburg) was a German philologist, Anglist, Germanist and Slavist.

He wrote numerous publications on the exchange of the Slavic and Low German languages, including his doctorate The German Loan Words in Polish , Vol. 1 (Phonology), submitted in 1937 , which, through the mediation of Max Vasmer, was published by the Slavic Institute of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin (der today's Humboldt University ).

Life

Walter Kaestner was born as the youngest son of the businessman Emil Kästner and his wife Auguste (née Blersch) in Lokstedt near Hamburg, then in Prussia. After graduating from high school at Easter 1931, he studied German, English and Slavic studies at the Hanseatic University there with Professors Agathe Lasch , Conrad Borchling , Gustav Rosenhagen , Wolff, and attended the lectures of Ernst Cassirer and Arthur Byhan.

In 1937 he submitted his dissertation The German Loan Words in Polish , which was first published in 1938 by the Preilipper publishing house, and the following year was published as a hardback by the Harrassowitz publishing house (Leipzig). It should be followed by a dictionary as Volume 2. The font was reprinted in 1967 by Krauss-Reprint ( Nendeln , Liechtenstein).

Due to the war, being drafted to the Finnish front and a long imprisonment in Russia , his scientific work was interrupted until the 1950s.

After several years of teaching at the Bismarck-Gymnasium Hamburg, he gained renewed recognition in the 1970s and 1980s by the younger generation of Slavists and Germanists ( Ernst Eichler , Gilbert de Smet , Gerhard Cordes , Jürgen Udolph and others).

Through Ernst Eichler's mediation, his academic legacy came to the Institute for Eastern European Studies in Leipzig .

In 1952 Walter Kaestner joined the Central Office for Family Studies in Lower Saxony. V. at. From 1962 to 1983 he was also its chairman. At the beginning of his term of office, the name of the association was renamed, which has had its current name, Genealogical Society Hamburg , since mid-1963 .

The artist Arnd Kaestner is his son.
