Walter Leitner (politician)

Walter Leitner (born February 7, 1915 in Salzburg ; † April 8, 2002 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( VdU / FPÖ ) and industrial worker. From 1954 to 1978 he was regional councilor in the Salzburg regional government .

education and profession

Walter Leitner first attended elementary school in Salzburg and then moved to the Federal Realschule Salzburg , where he passed the Matura in 1933 . Until his relegation from the university in 1935 he studied German and folklore at the University of Graz and then worked from 1935 to 1938 as an illegal youth leader of the Hitler Youth in Salzburg. After Austria's annexation in March 1938, he became the full-time leader of the Hitler Youth that year and remained in this position until the end of the war in 1945. Between 1939 and 1941 he did his military service as a mountain hunter in World War II , and from 1944 to 1945 he fought for arms -SS and became a prisoner of war in 1945 . He then spent the time up to 1947 in the Glasenbach camp and then worked as an unskilled worker at VÖEST from 1947 to 1949 . He also learned the profession of carpenter and worked as an insurance employee. In addition, from 1949 to 1954 he was office manager and accountant at Leube in Gartenau .

Politics and functions

After his professional and political commitment to the Hitler Youth, Leitner was given an amnesty in 1951. From 1949 he became a member of the newly founded Association of Independents (VdU) and in 1952 took over the function of organizational manager of the VdU in Tennengau . On December 11, 1954, Leitner was elected to the provincial council in the Salzburg provincial government, where he held this office until January 24, 1978. In the mid-1950s he switched to the newly founded FPÖ and was the regional party leader of the FPÖ-Salzburg between 1965 and 1975. In July 1959, from February to June 1964 and May 1974, he was a member of the Salzburg state parliament for a short period. He was also from 1959 to 1974 Chamber of Labor Councilor of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees.
