Walter Mannowsky

Walter Mannowsky (born November 9, 1881 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1958 there ) was a German art historian .

Walter Mannowsky was the son of the Reichsbank director in Breslau and Privy Councilor Henry Mannowsky and his wife Susanna, nee. Lurking. After attending grammar school in Breslau, he first studied law and art history at the Universities of Breslau and Munich . On April 5, 1906, he passed the first state legal examination in Wroclaw and worked as a trainee lawyer in the area of ​​the Wroclaw Higher Regional Court until August 1909. On April 5, 1907, he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD. He then resigned from the judicial service and continued studying art history in Munich and Halle . In 1910 he was in Halle at Adolph Goldschmidt Dr. phil. PhD. From 1910 to 1914 he was a research assistant at the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome. After participating in the First World War , he worked from 1918 to 1922 as a research assistant at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin. In 1922 he became director of the city art collections in Gdansk . Since May 1933 he was a member of the NSDAP and a supporting member of the SS . In June 1938 he became director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Frankfurt am Main. In this position he was involved in the “expropriation” of Jewish property that ended up in his museum. He was relieved of his office from June 1945 to September 1946, after which he was again director of the museum until his retirement in 1948. In 1949 he was briefly employed by the city of Frankfurt for the duration of the restoration of the Maximilian von Goldschmidt-Rothschild collection .
