Walter Melzer

Walt (h) er Erhard Melzer (born October 7, 1894 in Leipzig , † June 23, 1961 in Bremen ) was a German infantry general in World War II .

Life

During the First World War Melzer fought as a reserve lieutenant in the infantry regiment "King Georg" No. 106 of the Saxon Army . For his services as a platoon leader during the fighting on the Eastern Front , Melzer was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry on November 10, 1915 . After the end of the war, he was accepted into the Reichswehr .

During World War II , Lieutenant General Melzer commanded the 252nd Infantry Division on the central section of the Eastern Front from January 1943 to October 12, 1944 . On October 12, 1944 he took over the leadership of the XXIII. Army corps that defended in the Pultusk area as part of the 2nd Army at the end of the year and returned through West Prussia to the Baltic Sea until April 1945 in the Danzig area .
