Walter Menn

Walter Menn (born June 4, 1890 in Hilchenbach , † June 9, 1967 in Krombach) was a German librarian.

Life

Menn attended high school in Hagen and then studied history and classical philology in Halle , Freiburg and Marburg , where he received his doctorate in 1918. From 1914 to 1916 he did military service in the First World War. In 1917 he began his library training as a trainee at the University Library of Münster , which he completed in 1919 with the specialist examination in Göttingen.

In 1920 he went to the University Library of Kiel as a library assistant , but in the same year he moved back to the University Library of Münster, where he became a library councilor in 1922. In 1932 he left Münster to become deputy director of the Greifswald University Library .

From 1946 Menn was director of the Mainz University Library . He stayed there until his retirement in 1955. He completely rebuilt the holdings and worked closely with the Mainz City Library . In 1947 he got the university to give the library a wing in its building. The library only got its own building after Menn's tenure.
