Walter S. Gibson

Walter S. Gibson , sometimes Walter Samuel Gibson , (born March 31, 1932 in Columbus , Ohio ; † November 18, 2018 in Saratoga Springs , New York ) was an American art historian and university professor .

Life

Gibson's father was an engineer and his mother was a secretary. After high school he was drafted into the American Army during the Korean War , where he served in the Finance Corps from 1952 to 1954 . After his release, he studied at Ohio State University in Cleveland (Ohio) , where he graduated cum laude with the title BFA in 1957 . He received his MA at Harvard University in 1960. In the same year he was able to travel to Europe for a year with a Fulbright Award and prepare his dissertation.

In 1966 Gibson went to Case Western Reserve University as an assistant , where he completed his doctoral thesis in 1969 and submitted it to Harvard in 1969. Doctoral supervisor was Seymour Slive , the subject of the dissertation was the paintings by Cornelis Engelbrechtsen . In 1971 he was appointed associate professor and headed the art history department at Case until 1979 .

Gibson had been married since 1972.
