Walter Salzburger (born January 1, 1975 in Wörgl ) is an Austrian evolutionary biologist and professor at the University of Basel .

Life

Salzburger studied biology at the University of Innsbruck between 1993 and 1998 . This was followed by a doctorate at the same university, which he graduated with honors in 2001. In his doctorate, Salzburger dealt with the formation of species of cichlids in Lake Tanganyika . After various research stays at Harvard University , the University of Konstanz , the University of Lausanne , the University of Basel and the University of Oslo , Walter Salzburger became Professor of Zoology at the University of Basel in 2012 .

research

Salzburger's research interests lie in the evolution of animals, the adaptation of animals to their environment and the creation of ecological, morphological, behavioral and genetic diversity . His main research area is the molecular basis of evolution, for example the processes of adaptation and speciation.

Salzburg uses cichlids as model organisms . These tropical freshwater fish show a Gondwana distribution with representatives from India, Madagascar, South and Central America and Africa. More than 2000 species have evolved over the past million years. The cichlid species in the East African Great Lakes Tanganyika , Malawi and Victoria are some of the most amazing examples of adaptive radiation and explosive speciation. Salzburger is interested in the development of the biodiversity of the cichlids, the intrinsic factors underlying the tendency of the cichlids to form explosively as well as the external (environmental) events that trigger the cichlid's radiation. In particular, Salzburger is researching the molecular genetic and genomic basis of the evolutionary success of cichlids.

Salzburger published in the renowned journals Nature , Science and PNAS, among others .
