Walter Schirmer (prelate)

Walter Schirmer (born June 16, 1928 in Pforzheim ; † October 19, 2018 in Bamberg ) was a German prelate and Caritas director .

In 1934 he moved to Nuremberg with his family. Due to the war, he was able to graduate from high school in 1949 at the new high school . After studying philosophy and Catholic theology in Bamberg, Archbishop Joseph Otto Kolb ordained him as a priest on July 15, 1954. He then became a chaplain in Ebermannstadt and Nuremberg St. Anton. In 1958 he became secretary to Archbishop Josef Schneider and cathedral vicar. In 1962 he was appointed director of the diocesan charity. In 1967 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. to Monsignor appointed and in 1983 by John Paul II. to honor prelates . In 1979 the German Caritas Association awarded him the Gold Caritas Badge of Honor and in 1987 the Silver Bread Plate of the German Caritas Association. The Federal Republic awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1975 and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1981. From the Free State of Bavaria he received the Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit in 1993 and the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1996 . He built up the Caritas advice centers and the Caritas district centers. They later became independent associations. Under his leadership the nursing schools in Nuremberg and Bamberg were founded. In 1998 he retired as Director of Caritas and was named Dome of Honor. On April 4, 2007, Schirmer established the Prelate Walter Schirmer Foundation to support the training of nurses and nurses.
