Walter Schulz (soccer player, 1925)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter Schulz (born March 13, 1925 ) is a former German soccer player who played first division soccer from 1950 to 1952 in the upper league of the German Sports Committee of the GDR .

Athletic career

Schulz, already brought in from Bernau in the spring , played his first game in the DS-Oberliga on September 3, 1950 for the East Berlin club VfB Pankow. In the previous season, VfB had played in the overall Berlin city league , but then had to switch to the major league because the GDR leadership did not accept the newly introduced contract player system for the East Berlin football teams. The Oberliga was the top division in GDR football. Walter Schulz was a regular in the VfB team and came to a total of 31 league games during the season, but never scored a goal. Several VfB players had not taken part in the change to the DS-Oberliga, so that the team had to be completely reorganized for the 1950/51 season. This turned out not to be suitable for the first division and had to be relegated at the end of the season as bottom of the league table.

After the descent of VfB, only one East Berlin team would have been represented in the DS-Oberliga with engine Oberschöneweide . Since this did not correspond to the sporting importance of the "capital of the GDR", the GDR leadership provided a second team from East Berlin in the top division. For this purpose, a new soccer section was set up at the company sports community (BSG) unit Pankow . This should take over the relegated VfB players, but only about half of the previous regular cast was ready. One of those willing to change was Walter Schulz, who now had to play in a team with over ten newcomers. He was used in all 36 point games by coach Kurt Vorkauf and had his regular place as a central defender (at that time known as a middle runner or "stopper"). He also belonged to the expanded circle of the so-called core team, which had been formed in preparation for the first games of the GDR national team. Like VfB, the BSG unit did not succeed in securing relegation; she also landed in last place in the league. Surprisingly, however, the Pankower reached the final of the GDR soccer cup. Although they were defeated 1-0 in the semi-finals by Lok Stendal , the Stendal team were then disqualified for the involvement of an ineligible player. In the final on September 14, 1952 against the runner-up SG Volkspolizei Dresden, unit Pankow lost 3-0 without a chance, Walter Schulz was there as a left midfielder.

In the second-rate GDR league , Schulz played for Unity Pankow until 1954. After the Pankower were relegated to the East Berlin District League after the 1953/54 season , their football section was taken over by the BSG Lok Lichtenberg, where Schulz continued to be active as a player-coach. In 1957 he rose with his team in the 1955 as a new third division founded . GDR League II , but then ended his active career.
