Walter Uhlig (born April 8, 1925 in Gelenau / Erzgeb. , † 2006 in Annaberg-Buchholz ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Even as a child, Uhlig's above-average musical talent was audible. In 1939 he was already singing in the Gelenau church choir and was noticed with his powerful vocal material in small solo performances in the church there. He first began an apprenticeship as a machine fitter . After the Second World War he learned the trade of a stocking maker in his birthplace . From 1950 he took private singing lessons. When the Chemnitz Opera House reopened , he sang in Fidelio in the extra choir at the opening premiere in 1950 .

In 1951 he took first place in Annaberg in a singing competition on the occasion of the World Festival of Youth and Students . In the same year, Die Jahreszeiten was engaged for the demanding tenor role in Haydn's oratorio ; but for the time being at a local festival in Weißbach, where the orchestra consisted of students from the Zschopau music school. Between 1951 and 1953 Uhlig sang in Freiberg Cathedral , at the consecration of bells in Clausnitz , in the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach in Sehma and in numerous concerts, opera and operetta evenings in the Upper Ore Mountains.

From 1953 Uhlig was engaged as a tenor at the Annaberg City Theater. In 1953, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Annaberg Theater, he sang Max in a festival performance of Carl Maria von Weber's opera Freischütz . With this role he also appeared on the open-air stage in Greifensteine . Uhlig was valued for his "brilliant and powerful vocal material". Rudolf / Rodolfo in La Bohème was one of his brilliant roles at the Annaberg Theater ; his partner as Mimì was Felicitas Schlousen . He was considered a "reliable" singer; he often saved performances at the Annaberg City Theater at short notice as a jump-in.

Uhlig had guest engagements at the Döbeln Theater and the Eisleben Theater. In 1965 he sang at the Döbeln a. a. Faust in Margarethe , Count Leonard in the comic opera Diana by Carl Millöcker and the bon vivant Georges Dumenil in the operetta Der Opernball . Uhlig also took on acting roles at the Annaberg Theater; so in 1968 he played the carpenter in Egmont . In the 1970s he gave up his singing career. After retiring from the stage, he worked as a singing teacher. For a short time he was artistic director of the “Erzhammer” cultural center in Annaberg.
