Walter Wink

Walter Wink (born May 21, 1935 in Dallas , Texas , † May 10, 2012 in Berkshire Mountains , Massachusetts ) was Professor of Biblical Exegesis at Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City .

Wink worked as a parish minister and professor at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York . From 1989 to 1990 he was a Peace Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace .

Wink is known for his work on power structures with a progressive Christian view of current political and cultural issues. He coined the phrase "the myth of redemptive violence" and contributed to treatises on active nonviolence ("militant nonviolence"), homosexuality and Jesus research. In spring 2014 it was published under the title “Transformation of the Powers. A Theology of Nonviolence ”is the German translation of“ The Powers that Be ”(1999), the sum of his Powers trilogy, in which he explains his idea of active nonviolence as the third way between passivity and the use of violence that Jesus taught and lived .

Neal Stephenson adopted some of Wink's ideas for his assumptions about the phenomenology of oppression ("an epidemiology of power disorders").

In contrast to the majority of the representatives of gay theology , however, Wink sees greater problems with the text of the Bible: “I have long insisted that it is about hermeneutics and that efforts to rotate the text so that it means something, what he clearly does not say are deplorable. Simply put, the Bible is negative about same-sex behavior, and there is no getting around that. ” He adds, “ Strictly speaking, it is about the weight that this judgment should have in the ethics of the Christian life. ”

Wink advocates freedom of choice of sexual orientation: "I would support anyone who was able to change his / her sexual orientation, but I also support all those who for whatever reason cannot or do not want to."
