Walther Bötticher (born August 27, 1885 in Hagen ; † September 3, 1916 on the Somme ) was a German painter and representative of Expressionism .

Life

Even as a high school student , Walther Bötticher often visited the Folkwang Museum , which Karl Ernst Osthaus opened in Hagen in 1902 , where he got to know Expressionism and in particular the work of Christian Rohlfs and Emil Nolde . In 1906 Bötticher studied first at the art school in Weimar and at the teaching and experimental studios for applied and free art ( Debschitz School ) in Munich . In 1907/08 he shared a studio with Christian Rohlfs in Hetschburg near Weimar and also took lessons there. Bötticher moved to Berlin in 1910 . Here he made contact with Emil Nolde and the artist community Brücke . But he turned down the offer to join the artist community and in 1911 he returned to Hagen. This was followed by solo and group exhibitions and he was also featured in various magazines ( Cicerone , Kunstchronik , Die Rheinlande and Xenien ). With the outbreak of the First World War he came to the front, was injured, but returned quickly and finally fell on the Somme in 1916 .

Artistic creation

"The works that were created during these years reveal a deep relationship with both nature and the decorative profession of painting. He saw the landscape with love and devotion, but he also always saw it as a decorator. He never lost himself in impressionistic analysis, He built the decorative work from reliably captured picture elements. His picture constructions are carried out as logically as his impressions are delicately perceived. And they are rich in it. You feel no manner, but living progress from picture to picture. Each throw is a creation, and in this his landscapes and portraits do not differ from the free, figurative compositions. Biblical subjects particularly suited his deep nature, which never avoided any problem. He knew how to grasp them tragically. But what he created always remained the image, which overcame the thematic through the richness and beauty of its colorful existence graphic sheets, drawings, wood and linoleum cuts. They combine now grace, now depth of feeling with a powerful breadth of the presentation. Boys bathing, riders, and cows grazing are frequent; a colored crucifixion is at the center of the biblical material. "

"He belongs to the group that has Matisse as its leader in France and Nolde in Germany. [...] Whoever wants to recognize where our art's future hopes lie today will have to remember the name of this artist." (Karl Ernst Osthaus about Walther Bötticher)

Works by him are available in the Osthaus Museum Hagen , the Museum Folkwang in Essen and the Kunsthalle Mannheim .

Walther Bötticher's works were considered degenerate art under the National Socialists and were removed from German museums in 1937/38.
