Life

Walther Schwering was the eldest son of the medical adviser Walter Schwering (1850-1936) and his wife Johanna geb. Heyl (1858-1938). He grew up with nine younger siblings in Billerbeck, where he attended the rectorate school. From 1898 he attended high school in Warendorf and lived there with his uncle, the city missionary Felix Schwering. When he accepted a pastor's position in Albersloh in 1900 , Walther switched to the Royal High School in Coesfeld , where he passed his school leaving examination in 1903. In the summer semester of 1903 he went to the University of Münster and studied classical philology, archeology and history. He was most influenced by the philologist Peter Sonnenburg , whose lectures and seminar exercises on the old Latin texts Schwering led to his first research focus: Plautus research. In addition, he attended the Sanskrit exercises of Professor Wilhelm Streitberg , who, along with Sonnenburg, became his most important academic mentor in the following years. In August 1907 Schwering was awarded a doctorate degree with a dissertation on Amphitruo des Plautus. phil. PhD . He then prepared for the teaching exams , which he failed after several attempts due to poor results in philosophy .

On September 1, 1908 Schwering received a job at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich , where he held the Prussian assistant position from October 1, 1908. There he excerpted various late Latin texts ( Bruns' Fontes iuris , Rufinus' translation of Origenes ' commentary on the letters to the Romans, Latin inscriptions and other things), worked on the directory of proper names and wrote articles for volumes III and IV. In the course of this work he also drove advancing his own research. He was supported by Wilhelm Streitberg, who moved to the University of Munich in 1909 . Schwering published essays on the influence of Greek on Latin and on Latin semantics in the journal Indo-European Research , edited by Streitberg . For the winter semester of 1912/13 he was given leave to study philosophy at the Berlin University .

From his semantic studies Schwering developed a habilitation project to determine the true meaning of the word contaminare in Roman poetry. He presented his theses in a lecture as early as 1914. However, it did not come to work out, because after a vacation in the summer of 1914 and the outbreak of the First World War , he volunteered.

From August 26, 1914 he was a member of the Landsturm and was trained as a soldier. On November 1, he was made a private and assigned to the 2nd Bavarian Infantry Regiment . On December 19, he and his unit were sent to Belgium and deployed on the Western Front. From December 22nd he was stationed in Commines , from January 4, 1915 he was involved in combat operations. A few days later he fell ill with typhus and was admitted to the hospital on January 27th. On January 30, he was transferred to Tournai , where he died two days later. He was buried in Tournai and reburied in a military cemetery in Vladslo in the 1950s .

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, Walther Schwering's correspondence with his mother appeared in the summer of 2015 under the title In the distance, the thunder of the cannons .
