Live and act

Walther comes from the noble family of the Lords of Rötteln, who lived in the Basel area . His father was Dietrich III. von Rötteln, his brother, Lüthold II von Rötteln , was bishop of Basel from 1238 to 1248, his uncle, Konrad II of Tegerfelden , from 1209 to 1233 bishop of Constance .

Walther was canon in Basel and from 1209 in Constance . From 1211 to 1214 he was provost of the cathedral in Constance and was elected Bishop of Basel before September 1, 1213. In 1215, at the request of the cathedral chapter of Pope Innocent III. the diocese withdrawn again, presumably because of wasting the episcopal goods. Walther returned to the Konstanz cathedral chapter and was cathedral scholaster from 1221 to 1230 and archdeacon of Burgundy in 1223 .
