Wanapitei River ( French Rivière Wanapitei ) is a river in Greater Sudbury and in the Sudbury District of the Canadian province of Ontario .
It has its origin in Scotia Lake , 20 km east of Halfway Lake Provincial Park in the Sudbury District. From there it flows a short distance north, then east. It turns south 20 km southwest of Ishpatina Ridge . After about 60 kilometers it flows into Wanapitei Lake . At the southern end of the lake, the Wanapitei River continues its course south. Eventually it meets the French River , near its confluence with Georgian Bay . The river has a length of about 200 km and is a popular destination for whitewater canoeists .
Ontario Power Generation operates a number of hydropower plants along the river (Stinson 5 MW, Coniston 5 MW, McVittie 3 MW).
The river name is derived from the Ojibwa word "waanabidebiing" and refers to the shape of Lake Wanapitei.
A settlement that owes its name to the river, is written Wahnapitae .
