description

Branch with ripe cones

Cupressus sargentii grows as an evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 25, but mostly only 10 meters. The rough, fibrous bark is furrowed. The open or dense crown is more broad than high or columnar in shape. The 1.5 to 2.5 millimeter thick branches are opposite to each other on the branches.

The leaves are shaped like scales. On the underside of the leaf there is an inconspicuous, mostly blue-green gland that normally does not secrete resin .

The male cones are 3 to 4 millimeters long and around 2 millimeters thick. They contain three to four pollen sacs . The cones are usually spherical in shape with a diameter of 2 to 2.5 centimeters. As they ripen, they are colored brown or gray. Each cone usually consists of six to eight scales on which there are isolated resin bubbles. The 4 to 6 millimeter long seeds are dark brown in color and have a weak to strong, blue-green tint.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Cupressus sargentii is in the Coast Ranges , in the Santa Lucia Mountains and in the San Rafael Mountains in California. You can find them there from the far north of Mendocino County and Colusa County in the north via Lake County , Napa County and Marin County to Alameda County , Monterey County , San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County in the south .

Cupressus sargentii is a species of tree of the Mediterranean climate . The species thrives at altitudes of 200 to 1100 meters. There it grows mainly in forests and undergrowth, often on serpentine soils . The annual rainfall is around 600 mm, depending on the location.

Systematics

It was first described as Cupressus sargentii in 1909 by Willis Linn Jepson in A Flora of California 1 (1), p. 61. The synonyms Callitropsis sargentii (Jeps.) DP Little , Neocupressus sargentii (Jeps.) De Laub are sometimes used . or Hesperocyparis sargentii (Jeps.) Bartel used for the species.

Cupressus sargentii forms hybrids with Cupressus macnabiana in the Costal Ranges . This is the only known, natural cross of species within the genus of the cypress ( Cupressus ).

Hazard and protection

Cupressus sargentii is listed as “not endangered” on the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.
