The Wangenitzsee is located in the Schober group in the Hohe Tauern National Park at 2465  m above sea level. A. and is the largest mountain lake in the federal state of Carinthia .

The lake is located southeast of the Hohe Perschitzkopf ( 3125  m ), only about 100 meters from the border with East Tyrol . On its northern shore is at 2508  m the Wangenitzseehütte , the lake is thus at the Wiener Höhenweg .

The lake covers an area of ​​21.57 hectares, the maximum depth is 48 meters, with an average depth of 16.2 meters. The shoreline is 2 km, the volume of the lake 3.487 million m³. There are three small islands in the south-western area of ​​the lake. The catchment area of ​​the lake is relatively small at 1.94 km². The main tributary of the lake is the Kreuzsee, which is drained via the Wangenitzbach into the Möll .

The flora of the lake area consists mainly of crooked sedge grass , especially Scheuchzer's cotton grass grows here .
