history

Wapeldorf is named after the Wapel , which used to be the border river between the county of East Friesland and the Duchy of Oldenburg . From the south, the meanness area bordering peasantry Bekhausen the Wapel. The establishment of Wapeldorf goes back to the 1806 in Oldenburg enacted Partial Ordinance. Then large-scale conversions of communal lands into private ownership were put into effect. When the Bekhausen meanness was divided, which began in 1807, there was a surplus of 360 Jück , about 180  hectares . This area was the origin of Wapeldorf. The date of the division, May 4, 1811, can commonly be seen as the founding date of Wapeldorf.

The allocation of the cultivation positions was carried out according to strict criteria in order to avoid the failure of the new settlement. For example, enthusiasm for work, ability to work, existing assets, etc. had to be shown. The focus was on the cultivation of the land and the extraction of peat , as this represented good income opportunities as fuel.

In 1815 the settlement became an independent peasantry and in 1820 got its own school. At that time there were already 215 residents living in 35 houses. The school existed until 1970.

economy

From the original 36 settler sites, there are still a few rural sites that are full-time farming. The dairy industry is in the foreground.
