War of the Wizards is a 2009 South Korean feature film directed by Choi Dong-hun .

action

The action of the film begins in 16th century Korea during the Joseon Dynasty . The young sorcerer's apprentice Jeon Woo-chi is one of the most talented of his craft, but he prefers to waste his tricks for his own benefit. When the magical Magic Flute Manpasijeok passes into the hands of the Yogwae , malicious demons, three Taoist monks rely on the magicians Hwadam and Cheongwan to get the flute back. Woo-chi can get these for his master Cheongwan. It is divided in half to ensure that it does not fall into the hands of a demon again, as they cannot repair the flute. Hwadam is then taken over by a demon and kills Cheongwan. However, it seems to the three monks as if it was Woo-chi who killed his master, whereupon they put him and his helper Choraengi in a picture for 500 years.

In Seoul the modern era demons reappear. Since Hwadam cannot be found, they bring back Woo-chi, who is supposed to hunt the creatures. It takes Woo-chi and his friend Choraengi some time to find their way in the modern world. They also meet the young Seo In-gyeong, who in the eyes of Woo-chis Gwabu must be from his time. It soon turns out that Hwadam is behind the risen demons. He finally takes control of In-gyeong to lead Woo-chi to him. But he can defeat Hwadam and save Korea.

background

The film is based on the Korean heroic legend "Jeonuchijeon" ( kor. 전우치 전 ; story of Jeon U-chi ). The story is about Jeon Woo-chi, who is believed to have lived during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897) and was probably written in the early 17th century. In the story, Woo-chi lived in Kaesŏng and was a Confucian scholar who was also active as a Taoist magician. With his magic he stood up for the good. However, he could not control his powers, which is often also a problem for good people. In the story, Hwadam is not Jeon Woo-chi's rival, but his master and colleague.

publication

The film premiered on December 23, 2009. It had more than 6.1 million viewers in South Korea. In Germany, the film was released on January 28, 2011 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc under the Amasia label .

reception

Alex Attimonelli from Cinema magazine praised the charm that emanates from the film due to the sorcerer's apprentice, who first has to find his way in a world that is strange to him. However, the film was described as overloaded in terms of content.
