Warith Deen Mohammed (originally Wallace Delaney Mohammed ; born October 30, 1933 ; died September 9, 2008 ), also known as WD Mohammed or Imam W. Deen Muhammad etc., was an American Muslim leader, theologian, philosopher, and reformer African American thinker (1975-2008). He was among the most important Muslim leaders in North America who dissolved the Nation of Islam (NOI) in 1976 and transformed it into an orthodox Islamic movement , the World Community of Al-Islam in the West , which later became the American Society of Muslims .

biography

Mohammed was born on October 30, 1933 . He was the son of Elijah Muhammad , the second leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI) from 1933 to 1975.

Initially, WD Mohammed followed in the footsteps of his father Elijah Muhammad and became the leader of the Temple of the NOI in Philadelphia . In 1961 he received a three-year prison sentence for refusing to serve in the military. In prison, he carefully studied the Koran and Sunna , which opened his eyes to the differences between his father's teachings and those of the rest of the Islamic world. After his release from prison, he broke away from the NOI and formed a splinter group, the Afro-Descent Upliftment Society . After the murder of Malcolm X in February 1965, he rejoined the NOI. In the following years he was repeatedly expelled from the movement because of dissenting teachings. After his father's death in 1975, however, he managed to take over the leadership (as Chief Minister ) of the NOI.

He brought most of the original NOI members to the mainstream of traditional Sunni Islam from now until 1978. With this merger, he oversaw the largest mass conversion in the history of Islam in the United States . He rejected the earlier deification of Wallace Fard Muhammad - the founder of the Nation of Islam - accepted whites as fellow worshipers, forged closer ties with the established Muslim communities and introduced the Five Pillars of Islam into his group's theology .

After the death of his father Elijah Muhammad, various factions had formed that opposed these changes, especially under Louis Farrakhan , who in 1981 revived the name Nation of Islam ( The Final Call ) for his organization. Farrakhan's NOI and the aforementioned final call claim direct continuity with the pre-1976 NOI.

WD Mohammed has received numerous awards and prizes, including from US President Bill Clinton , Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Pope John Paul II. He was also the first Muslim to say morning prayer on the floor of the US Senate.

The publishing house WDM Publications publishes its writings.

The eldest son of W. Deen Mohammed is Warithudeen Mohammed II , he is the president of The Mosque Cares (Ministry of Imam W. Deen Mohammed) , a charity founded by Imam W. Deen Mohammed (501c3).

The Community of Imam W. Deen Mohammed ( IWDM Community ) now has a wide network of mosques ( Masjids ) and Muslim centers in the country.
