Warnakulasurya Wadumestrige Devasritha Valence Mendis (born May 21, 1958 in Koralawella , Moratuwa , Archdiocese of Colombo ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Chilaw .

Life

He studied in his home country and at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on July 20, 1985 . He then worked for four years as a Fidei Donum priest in the diocese of Kandy . During this time he acquired a master's degree at the university there in the field of religious studies.

Since 1989 he has been a faculty member at the Kandy seminary . There he was dean for philosophy, head of the new philosophy department and rector of the seminar. He is also head of the Episcopal Commission for Interreligious Dialogue.

On January 17, 2005, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Chilaw by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination on April 2nd of the same year by the Bishop of Chilaw, Frank Marcus Fernando . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Colombo , Oswald Gomis , and the Bishop of Trincomalee-Batticaloa , Joseph Kingsley Swampillai .

With the age-related resignation of Frank Marcus Fernando on October 19, 2006, he succeeded him as Bishop of Chilaw.
