Warren Upham

Warren Upham (born March 8, 1850 in Amherst , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire , † January 29, 1934 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) was an American geologist, known for his many years of work on mapping the shoreline of the fossil glacial lake Lake Agassiz . He was also a local Minnesota historian and botanist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Upham ".

Upham was born on a farm in New Hampshire, studied at Dartmouth College with the degree in 1871 and worked as a geologist in New Hampshire and from 1879 in Minnesota for the state geologist Alexander Newton Winchell . He was given the task of exploring the Ice Age Lake Agassiz , which took him seven years and 11,000 miles (Minnesota, North Dakota to Manitoba, Canada). The results were published by both the Canadian Geological Survey (1890) and the US Geological Survey (1895).

In addition to work on the geology of Minnesota and a catalog of the plants of Minnesota, he also published a book on the history of the place names of Minnesota and other books on the history of Minnesota. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
