Wasabi - A Bull in Japan is a 2001 French-Japanese film directed by Gérard Krawczyk .

action

When the French detective superintendent Hubert Fiorentini, known for his very direct but quite successful investigative work, received the message from the lawyer Ishibashi from Japan that his former great love Miko Kobayashi was lying in the morgue and would be cremated the following day, he immediately fled to Tokyo .

Both had worked for the French secret service at the time and fell in love. But one day, nineteen years ago, Miko disappeared without a trace; Fiorentini returned to Paris and became a detective. After bumping into an overzealous customs officer, he is delighted to meet his former French secret service partner Momo, who has lived in Tokyo for years and drives him to see Miko's lawyer, at Tokyo Airport. There he is completely unexpectedly confronted with the existence of his and Miko's daughter Yumi, who has meanwhile grown into a rebellious, somewhat wasteful woman of almost 20 years. At first, because she hates her - her unknown - father, because he allegedly did violence to her mother and then disappeared, she is not allowed to find out about his identity. Fiorentini says goodbye to Miko and finds suspicious traces on the dead woman, crystals on the nose and earth under the fingernails, which he secures and gives Momo for analysis, which increases the confusion. Soon they are followed at every turn by black-clad men with sunglasses, but Fiorentini skillfully incapacitates them. Miko's medical file, which Yumi keeps at home, shows inconsistencies and subsequent text changes.

During a visit to the bank - Yumi's weekly pocket money is due - Fiorentini learns that there are two accounts in Yumi's name that she will not have access to until two days when she comes of age. They have huge fortunes: $ 200 million, $ 37 million in capital, and $ 163 million in interest. In addition, Fiorentini learns from Momo that after a preliminary trace evaluation the crystals consist of potassium cyanide , which is certainly not a cure for her alleged cancer, but with the Miko, taking into account the defensive injuries and the manipulated medical files, was murdered by the Yakuza and the whole thing was covered up. So he and his former partner Momo are looking for the perpetrators on their own, much to his delight. With Momo's help and his contacts, Fiorentini finds out that Miko disappeared from her old life with him nineteen years ago to work as a double agent on behalf of the government for the yakuza and thereby infiltrate them, which is a top-secret honor with one of the highest orders in Japan confirmed. Several years ago she had deposited a considerable amount of yakuza money (US $ 37 million) in one of the accounts in the name of her daughter. The organization wants back this 200 million dollars (including interest) by all means and is now after Yumi. After a breathtaking golf demonstration by Fiorentini in front of the yakuza chief Takanawa, "the zebra", he takes Yumi hostage with him. A small notebook hidden behind the plaster in Miko's former city apartment and a small key from Miko's estate with the analysis of the secured earth particles lead Fiorentini and Momo to a park in Kyoto , where the contents of a small wooden box reveal Miko's way of working.

Fiorentini manages with Momo as a bank clerk and his people disguised as customers as armed life insurance in the bank hall on the morning of Yumi's coming of age under the eyes of Takanawa, transferring the huge sum to his own account in Paris instead of his Swiss account and him and his people defeat in an exchange of fire with acrobatic interludes. The only task left for the previously alerted police was to secure and clean up the crime scene. After her tearful farewell to her father, who was found again, in the airport under the eagle eyes of Inspector Yasumoto and his people, Yumi promises to finish school under Momo's protection and to come to Paris after a month. To Fiorentini's horror, Momo's two large aluminum gun cases appear on the plane ...

The film title refers to the Japanese spice of the same name, Wasabi , which is available in small quantities e.g. B. is consumed together with sushi . Fiorentini, however, can eat the hot spice in large quantities without noticeable consequences - in contrast to his partner Momo, as is impressively shown in the film.

"A tough action comedy with" Dirty Harry "elements that lives from the clash of two opposing cultures and is carried by a good leading actor."
