The Štěchovice hydropower plant is located above the town of Štěchovice about 25 kilometers south of the Czech capital Prague and is part of the Vltava cascade . The resulting reservoir stretches back to the Slapy dam .

The system consists of a run-of-river power plant with two Kaplan turbines with an output of 11.25  MW each and a pumped storage power plant with a Francis turbine with a peak output of 45 MW. The upper Homole basin of the pumped storage power plant is located around 500 meters south on Mount Chlum. The difference in altitude between the two bodies of water is 220 meters.

In addition to generating electricity, the system also serves to buffer the irregular runoff from the Slapy dam. There is a lock in the northern part of the barrier . In the middle part of the system there are 5 weir openings, each 20 meters wide. The bottom outlet of the system is located under the middle weir .

When the Vltava valley was flooded after the Štěchovice dam was completed in 1945, the St. John's rapids (Svatojánské proudy), famous for their scenic beauty and infamous for their dangerousness, sank , which Bedřich Smetana in his symphonic poem Vltava (The Moldau ) Had set a musical monument in 1874.

Due to construction work, the water level in front of and behind the barrage was lowered by October 2011. In part, the Vltava has only 30 centimeters of water in the shipping line below the Štěchovice barrage. Ships will not be funneled until the construction work is complete.
